Abandoned cart and checkout recovery

Configure Pushrr automations that send web push notifications after carts or checkouts are abandoned on Shopify.

Abandoned cart and checkout recovery

Pushrr can send automated web push notifications when a subscribed shopper leaves a cart or checkout without completing an order.

Supported recovery types

Automation typeWhat it tracksTypical use
Cart abandonmentShopify cart activity before checkoutRecover shoppers earlier in the buying journey.
Checkout abandonmentShopify checkout activityRecover shoppers who reached checkout but did not pay.

Pushrr provisions checkout abandonment as the default enabled Shopify recovery workflow. Cart abandonment is available as a separate workflow and can be enabled when the merchant is ready to recover shoppers earlier in the journey.

How recovery eligibility works

A recovery notification needs:

  • An active web push subscriber for the site.
  • A tracked cart or checkout subject.
  • A matching Shopify store connection.
  • An enabled automation workflow and enabled step.
  • No terminal event such as order paid or unsubscribe before send time.

Pushrr checks status again before sending. If the shopper has paid, unsubscribed, or the workflow was disabled, the scheduled send is skipped or cancelled instead of being sent.

If a cart later reaches checkout, or if a cart or checkout is paid, Pushrr treats that journey as terminal and cancels matching scheduled or in-flight recovery sends for that journey.

Configure an automation

Open Automations.

Create or edit an abandoned cart or abandoned checkout workflow.

Set the delay for each notification step.

Write the notification title, body, destination URL, and optional image or action buttons.

Enable the workflow and monitor recovery metrics.

Delay guidance

Shorter delays are better for cart abandonment because the shopper is still close to the browsing session. Checkout abandonment can use a slightly longer delay because the shopper already showed stronger purchase intent.

Automation reminders support delays from 15 minutes through 7 days. A workflow can contain up to 5 reminder steps, and enabled steps must use strictly increasing delays.

Very old cart or checkout events are closed out of the scheduling window so Pushrr does not keep retrying stale recovery subjects forever.

Recovery destination

Recovery actions use the best available recovery URL from Shopify cart, checkout, and storefront data. If a recovery URL is unavailable, Pushrr falls back to a safe storefront destination instead of sending a broken link.

Subscriber safety

Pushrr stores web push keys per website and does not rotate existing keys during automation setup. This protects existing subscribers from losing push access when you enable cart or checkout recovery.

Metrics to review

  • Scheduled sends.
  • Cancelled sends.
  • Sent notifications.
  • Clicks.
  • Recovered carts or orders when attribution is available.

Recovery attribution depends on Shopify events and the shopper journey. A notification can be delivered without a later purchase.
