Shopify getting started checklist
Connect a Shopify store, customize branding, test opt-in, and enable commerce recovery features.
Shopify getting started checklist
This Shopify-specific tutorial covers account access, store connection, storefront opt-in, subscriber verification, campaign creation, and abandoned cart recovery. For a normal website, start with Website integration. For a server, CMS plugin, or app backend, use the Site notification API.
Before you start
You need:
- A Pushrr account or reviewer test account.
- Access to a Shopify store where apps can be installed.
- A supported browser such as Chrome or Edge for web push testing.
- Permission to open the Shopify theme editor and enable app embeds.
Browser permissions
Web push prompts are controlled by the browser. If notifications are blocked for the storefront, reset browser permissions before testing.
1. Sign in to Pushrr
Open Pushrr and sign in with the provided account.
If you use passwordless sign-in, enter the email address and open the secure sign-in link from your inbox. The sign-in link is time-limited, so request a new link if it expires.
After signing in, Pushrr opens the dashboard or setup area for the selected workspace.
2. Confirm the store URL
Open Site settings and confirm the saved site URL points to the Shopify storefront.
Accepted examples:
https://your-store.myshopify.comhttps://www.yourstore.comwhen that domain resolves to the Shopify storefront
Pushrr uses this URL to determine the Shopify shop domain before starting installation. If the URL is missing or points to a non-Shopify site, the Shopify install flow cannot start.
3. Connect Shopify
From the setup hub, dashboard banner, or site settings page, click Connect Shopify.
Pushrr redirects to Shopify so the merchant can approve the app. After approval, Pushrr stores the Shopify connection and returns the merchant to the Shopify theme editor or setup flow.
The Shopify connection enables:
- Cart and checkout recovery events.
- Order-paid cancellation for recovery automations.
- App uninstall handling.
- Storefront app proxy and app embed support.
4. Enable the storefront app embed
In Shopify's theme editor, enable the Pushrr app embed if it is not already active.
The app embed allows Pushrr to load storefront web push setup on the Shopify storefront without asking the merchant to manually paste tracking code.
After enabling the embed, save the Shopify theme.
5. Configure opt-in prompt copy
Open Opt-in prompt in Pushrr.
Review:
- Prompt title.
- Prompt message.
- Allow and deny button labels.
- Display timing.
- Text direction for left-to-right or right-to-left languages.
The prompt should clearly explain why shoppers are being asked to allow browser notifications. Keep the copy short and specific.
6. Add notification branding
Open notification branding or site settings and confirm the store name and logo.
Pushrr uses this branding in notification previews and campaign content where supported by the browser. A recognizable store name and logo help shoppers understand which store sent the notification.
7. Subscribe from the storefront
Open the Shopify storefront in a supported browser.
When the Pushrr opt-in prompt appears:
- Choose the allow/subscribe action in the Pushrr prompt.
- Accept the browser's native notification permission dialog.
- Keep the storefront open briefly so the subscription can be saved.
If the browser prompt does not appear, check browser permission settings, private browsing mode, unsupported browser behavior, or previous deny decisions.
8. Confirm the subscriber in Pushrr
Open Subscribers in Pushrr.
Confirm that the test browser appears as an active subscriber. Subscriber details may include browser, device, approximate location, opt-in time, last-seen time, and status.
Only active subscribers are eligible for normal campaign and automation sends. Unsubscribed, denied, unsupported, or transferred subscribers are excluded from sends.
9. Create a test campaign
Open Campaigns and create a new campaign.
Add:
- Notification title.
- Short message.
- Destination URL.
- Optional image.
- Optional action buttons where supported.
Save the campaign as a draft or send it to a small eligible test audience. After sending, open the campaign report to review delivery, impressions, clicks, and unsubscribe metrics.
10. Test live campaign controls
If a campaign is actively sending, Pushrr can pause remaining pending and retryable deliveries.
Use this carefully:
- Pause stops remaining unsent work.
- Resume continues remaining eligible sends.
- Notifications already accepted by browser push services cannot be recalled.
11. Review abandoned cart and checkout recovery
Open Automations.
Pushrr supports:
| Workflow | What it does |
|---|---|
| Cart abandonment | Reminds subscribed shoppers who added items but did not start checkout. |
| Checkout abandonment | Reminds subscribed shoppers who started checkout but did not pay. |
Review the workflow copy, destination action, delay timing, and enabled steps before turning on recovery.
Automation reminders support delays from 15 minutes through 7 days. A workflow can contain up to 5 reminder steps, and enabled steps must use increasing delays.
12. Understand recovery cancellation
Pushrr checks recovery eligibility again before sending.
A scheduled recovery notification can be cancelled or skipped when:
- The shopper paid before send time.
- The shopper moved from cart to checkout before a cart recovery send.
- The subscriber unsubscribed or is no longer active.
- The workflow was disabled.
- The reminder step was replaced or archived.
- The cart or checkout journey became terminal.
This prevents stale recovery notifications from sending after the shopper has already moved on.
13. Review reporting
Use Pushrr reporting to review:
- Active subscribers.
- Campaign delivery.
- Impressions.
- Clicks.
- Unsubscribes.
- Automation sends.
- Recovery attribution where Shopify events allow it.
Metrics can differ from subscriber counts because browser endpoints can expire, permissions can change, and browsers do not guarantee every sent notification becomes a visible impression.
Reviewer checklist
For Shopify App Store review, the reviewer should be able to complete this path:
Sign in with the provided Pushrr test account.
Confirm or add the Shopify storefront URL.
Connect Shopify and approve the app install.
Enable the app embed in the Shopify theme editor.
Open the storefront and allow browser notifications.
Confirm the subscriber appears in Pushrr.
Create a campaign draft or send a small test campaign.
Review cart and checkout recovery automation setup.
Before submitting to Shopify
Make sure the reviewer account can complete this tutorial without hitting a billing, approval, missing-store, or unsupported-browser dead end.
